With Coach Josh
As we’re in the final weeks of another amazing term at Target Sports, I thought now was the perfect opportunity to share with you some of the work myself and our team have been working on in the background! We have some exciting changes that will be introduced over the next few weeks, focusing on providing even better service, value and fun for our Superstars.
Since Target Sports began in 2013, we have grown to provide over 500 children 2 -12 years with after school, morning and weekend soccer programs, every week, in locations across Perth. Each week Superstars attend their soccer class ready to be taught the next week from their tailored Target Sports Curriculum. From ‘dribbling’ around a volcano infested with crocodiles to ‘defending’ the treasure island from sea pirates, we use engagement as a key element to all classes.
Our programs coach key skills needed for every player’s development, with each class offering a technique, skill and game focus to enhance a players knowledge and skill level. Our programs appeal to Superstars of all abilities; from players who will be playing sport for the first time, to players with additional needs such as Autism and ADHD, as well as players who currently play in club teams and want to upskill. This is an offering we’re really proud of and feel is unique to Target Sports.
I was recently awarded a scholarship place to attend the Curtin Ignition Program 2019 from the City Of Wanneroo. On the Ignition Open Day, I realised the benefits of the course and how attending could help me and our team provide Superstars with excellent service and value, while helping Target Sports grow to provide our programs at even more locations across WA.
By the end of day one on the course, I knew I would be leaving with a strategy that would help us reach our goals.
On the second day, I was asked ‘Why?’.
Why did I start Target Sports?
Why do we coach soccer?
Why do children attend our programs?
Initially, I shared my response ‘I’m passionate about sports coaching and working with children. I’ve attended many sports coaching courses including; soccer, athletics, cricket and dodgeball to name a few. I have lots of experience working with children from ages 2 – 18 years of age and with this experience, I have developed a fun way to engage children in sports. I love what I do’.
Day three changed things. I know why I do what I do, but what is the ‘need’ for Target Sports? We researched current trends here in Australia and this is what I found;
- 1 In 4 children in Australia are currently obese or overweight.
- Children aged between 2 – 4 years should participate in 180 minutes of physical activity per day and children 5 – 12 years should participate in 60 minutes of physical activity per day.
- The Department of Education say schools, on average, spend 2 hours per week on physical activity.
- 12 % children aged between 5-8 years, 17% of children 9-11 years and 37% of children aged 12 – 14 years don’t participate as they don’t like physical activity.
Shocking isn’t it? The numbers, based on in-school sports don’t add up. There is a significant gap between what is taught in the school day and the requirements our children need to lead healthy active lives and to develop a healthy attitude to physical activity.
My personal background has always been in soccer, whether it be playing or coaching. Soccer is currently the most participated sport in the world and participation levels continue to grow each year.
Soccer is the tool we use to focus on fundamental movement skills with our 2.5 – 4 year olds, introduce skill development with our 5 – 7 year olds and focus on game play and further skill development with our 8 – 12 year olds. With a soccer focus to all our sessions children are active, social, participating in a team, learning the rules of the game and most importantly, having fun.
During the Ignition program, we developed our programs to meet the needs we feel are so important to help children enjoy physical activity. Over the coming weeks we will be sharing our ‘My First Soccer Team’ curriculum, new Sunday Games Days, Target Sports’ Coaching Development and so much more!
We aim to add value for players and parents while growing and reaching thousands of children across Perth, encouraging physical activity through soccer and developing a healthy attitude to movement. Thank you for supporting our programs, joining us on this exciting journey and trusting us with your children’s sporting development each and every week.
We can’t wait to share our plans!
